Here are some issues the Pope addressed to Congress

September 28, 2015

We need Pope Francis now more than ever. Through his humble and friendly ways, he conveys messages of compassion and he encourages solidarity at a global scale. He is the moral support that the world needs most nowadays.

During his visit to the USA, Pope Francis was welcomed with much affection and generosity. Our Pope is known for being down to earth and accepting; we have often heard him discussing sensitive topics, such as concerns regarding immigration reforms, traditional marriage, the death penalty, global warming and more. During his trip to the USA, Pope Francis made history as the first pontiff to address a joint meeting of Congress. Here he discussed the current global refugee crisis by insisting to “treat others with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated”. Currently, Europe and the rest of the developed world are overwhelmed by the numbers of refugees trying to seek asylum this year. The general response to this event has been to treat them as a "flow" rather than as individual asylum seekers. Pope Francis urged us all to not “discard whatever proves troublesome".

During his speech the Pope taught us to “let us seek for others the same possibilities which we seek for ourselves. Let us help others to grow, as we would like to be helped ourselves”. He added that “the challenges facing us today call for a renewal of that spirit of cooperation, which has accomplished so much good throughout the history of the United States” explained Pope Francis. Undoubtedly, it is an enormous challenge to gather the resources necessary to ‘resolve’ this refugee crisis. Yes, we need to take action somehow, but having Pope Francis give these powerful speeches is the motivation we truly need as a society.
